To all whom it may concern:

   Be it know that I, CHRISTOPHER EISENHARDT, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Handsaw-Handles, of which the following is a specification:

   The object of my invention is to render a handsaw more acceptable to those who use these instruments than those of ordinary construction, by constructing the handle of the saw in the manner shown in the drawing, so as to afford the best facilities for enabling the operator to use both hands with comfort when the application of more force is required than can be imparted to the saw by one hand -- as, for instance, when the operation of ripping is practiced.

   It will have been noticed that the ordinary handle of a handsaw is well adapted to the operator's right hand, by which alone the instrument is most generally manipulated; but when it becomes necessary to apply additional force to operate the saw, as in ripping, for instance, the conveniences afforded for grasping an ordinary handle with the left hand are most meager and unsatisfactory -- so much so that the operator is compelled to seize the upper portion of the handle between his fingers and thumb, which embrace the opposite sides only of the said handle, and the operator can never exert the full power of his left arm through his fingers and thumb when occupying this position with any satisfaction or comfort to himself.

   In my improved handle the recess e of the opening A is extended so far beyond its ordinary limits that the operator can introduce the thumb of his left hand into the recess from one side of the handle and bend his thumb upward to the opposite side, and this without touching the joint of the forefinger of his right hand with the joint of the thumb of his left hand, for it is most essential that there should be no rubbing of these joints together. A rounded shoulder, h, is formed on the upper edge of the handle at the point shown, so as to afford a rest for that portion of the palm of the left hand which is adjacent to the lower joints of the first and second fingers.

   By this conformation of the handle with special respect to the operator's left hand he is enabled to exert the full force of his left arm without inconvenience.

   I claim as my invention -- As an article of manufacture, a saw-handle provided with the recess e and rounded shoulder h, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
