No. 16 Handsaw

Disston No. 16 and D-16 Handsaws

16 etch

The Disston No. 16 saw and its successor, the short-lived D-16, were high-quality saws with a straight back and a close-up style handle. Its quality level was comparable to the D-8. The No. 16 or New 16 was sold from 1880-1928. If there was an "Old" 16 before that, I've never seen it or heard from anybody who owns one. The etch has the phrase "Thin Back" but there is no difference in the thickness of the back or the amount of taper to the blade. Like other full-sized Disston saws, the typical No. 16 saw is about .038" to .040" thick at the teeth and averages .032" at the center of the saw's back. Panel saws are .005" to .008" thinner than full-sized handsaws.

The other features of the No. 16 are a London Spring steel blade, applewood handle with ornate chip carving, and four sawnuts, or three if the saw blade is 20" or under in length. A quick way to identify the No. 16 is seeing that the medallion is the bottom nut, rather than in the middle of the pack.

The handle to the right is from a full-sized No. 16. Below it is the handle from the panel saw. On the bottom is a smaller panel saw with three saw nuts on the handle.

D-16 Etch

The D-16 was introduced in 1928, but was soon discontinued, as it does not appear in the 1932 or later catalogs. The D-16 was close in design to the D-8, the only difference being the straight back. Unlike its predecessor, the D-16 did not feature carving on the handle. The D-16 was available for that short time in either regular width or narrow (lightweight) pattern, according to catalogs.

Information taken from Disston 1927 catalog:

Choosing a saw for general use is largely a matter of personal preference. The following Disston Saws are all popular. One of the wide-blade patterns or the Lightweight patterns will have the temper, weight, and balance that just suits you.

More and more each year sawing is in lighter work. Carpenters and saw users do not have as much heavy sawing to do. Modern building methods have taken a great deal of it away. Therefore, Disston Lightweight Saws, having less weight and less width to the blade, are very popular. They are easier to handle on many of today's sawing jobs.
